the Volunteer Information Line
March 1, 2005
Starting in
March, BDP will offer four fun-filled, enriching Saturdays of volunteer
shipboard training during which volunteers will learn the skills needed
to become educator/deckhands. The training will take place in the Bivalve
Shipping Sheds on March 5, 12, 19 and April 2. For further information call

We have a very
busy 6 weeks ahead of us in order to have the boat ready for her 2005 sailing
season. We have ongoing repairs to the aft cabin house, centerboard trunk
and mast to complete. There are also electrical projects, blocks to be overhauled,
numerous painting projects and the foremast needs to be readied for removal.
We need help for the week of haulout, which starts Wednesday, March 2. There
is painting, scraping, sanding, caulking, and repairs to the centerboard
trunk to be done. There will be a short nautical skills class at the end
of the Saturday work parties. We hope to see you Saturday or any day (except
Sunday for now).
Volunteers
are needed to make follow-up phone calls during daytime business hours to
potential Bay Days business sponsors. Request letters and sponsor forms
will be mailed to more than one hundred potential sponsors during mid-March,
and the follow-up phone calls need to take place during the first two weeks
in April. Scripts and all necessary materials will be provided. If
you would like to help raise sponsorship money for Bay Days, please call
Jan at 856-785-2060 Ext. 108.
There are many
volunteer opportunites this year before and during Delaware Bay Days. Volunteer
hours during the event are:
Saturday,
June 4
1st Shift:
10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
2nd Shift:
2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Sunday,
June 5
1st Shift:
11 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
2nd Shift:
2 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Volunteer opportunities
include:
- help design,
build, paint and/or install signage on and off site (before and during
Bay Days)
- help set
up tables, chairs, stages, etc. the day/evening before (Friday, June 3)
- help direct
traffic to appropriate parking lots (we provide the safety vest)
- help setup
and/or staff strawberry shortcake booth and/or bake shortcake (we have
THE 'easy' recipe!)
- help set
up and/or staff snowcone booth (we supply the apron!).
- oversee
the exhibits in the museum and sell official BDP merchandise
- keep the
site recycling and waste containers emptied--great upper body workout!
- sell River
Tour tickets and help passengers board the 100-passenger tour boat
- help shuck
oysters and clams and serve hungry customers at the raw bar
